It is a tracking system which uses transponders on ships and is also used by Vehicle tracking services. The use of this system primarily is to avoid collision among various water transport bodies. The system helps in providing live tracking, position, course, and speed of the ship. AIS allow ships to view nearby marine traffic in their area and to be seen to other nearby ships. An AIS transceiver is added that allows local traffic to be viewed on an AIS enabled computer monitor or Chartplotter while transmitting information about the ship. Port authorities are equipped with receivers who can view the local traffic without transmitting their own location.
