About the port

Having two port entrances that are 250 and 420 metres wide, the port of Cartagena is one of the leading exporting ports in Colombia. Accommodating 1600 vessels carrying 2.4 million tonnes, the port also facilitates afloat repairs, chipping and cleaning.

Handling

The port of Cartagena represents three open ports and over 40 private ports and can handle exports of over 12, 150 TEU’s annually. The port with 37.4 hectares of open container yards has five warehouses covering 52.2 hectares and a transit shed that cover a total of 2.8 hectares. It also flaunts a total of 8 berths with berthing distance of 418 meters and depth ranging from 8.8-13.4 metres.

History

It all started in 1533 when a new the port of Cartagena was founded by Don Pedro de Heredia. With the coming years, the port soon became famous for the large fleets that stopped there to load gold to transport to Spain. After which the port has contributed immensely to the growth of maritime trade in Colombia.

Importance

Being a strong source of city’s economy, The Port of Cartagena also boasts its pilot station which is 8 nautical miles away from the port’s main berth. The port also provides provincial employment, income, and output to over 871 thousand people residing in the nearby region thus contributing to the growth of the economy.
