About the port

The Main Port is responsible for a wide range of operations that include cargo storage, loading, logistics as well as warehousing. It is South China's biggest comprehensive hub port which offers 49 berths and 23 anchorages. The port of Guangzhou usually covers over 300 ports in more than 80 countries and districts worldwide through its international maritime trade activities.

Handling

Guangzhou port serving millions of passengers is the second busiest port in mainland China and seventh busiest in the world for containerized cargo. The container terminal of the port of Guangzhou known as the Huangpu New Port has a storage area of 38,000 m 2 and an annual traffic capacity of 900 thousand TEUs per year.

History

Ming Dynasty initiated the fortifications of the port in late 14th century making Guangzhou a well known commercial center of import-export in the world. The port remained an important commercial hub and was given the name P’an-yu. Despite difficult times during China’s Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, the port continued to flourish its ways to the future.

Importance

With favorable weather conditions throughout the year, this port serves as a leading maritime gateway in the region of South China and is also an ideal transit center for intercontinental trade.
