Jos harjoitat tavaroiden vientiä ja tuontia, tunnet harmonoidun tavarankuvaus- ja koodausjärjestelmän, joka tunnetaan paremmin nimellä harmonisoitu järjestelmä (HS) tai harmonisoitu nimikkeistö (HSN). Se on yleisesti hyväksytty menetelmä kaupan pidettävien tavaroiden luokittelemiseksi. Sen päätehtävänä on auttaa tulliviranomaisia tunnistamaan tuotteet ja arvioimaan niille oikeat tullit ja verot. Harmonisoidussa järjestelmässä jokaiselle tuotteelle annetaan yksilöllinen numeerinen koodi, jota kutsutaan HS-koodiksi. Tässä koodissa on vähintään kuusi numeroa ja se voi tyypillisesti olla jopa 10 numeroa (vaikka Kiinassa on 13-numeroinen koodi).
