About the port

The port of Kobe residing more than 1.5 million people is well known for its international trade in the world. The port of Kobe with a capacity of handling 77 million tonnes of cargo flaunts 34 container berths distributed amongst river wharves, five docks and piers.

Handling

The Port of Kobe is a major port serving as an important commercial point in Japanand a maritime centre to the shipping industry which marks its economic value. The port also has a capacity to handle 36,482 vessels per annum. The port’s warehouse covers a huge land of about 5346 square metres of transit shed.

History

This port gained importance by the 8th century AD when the port was called Owada Anchorage and was used to travel to China. With the onset of 1869, the Port of Kobe was officially founded and became an important transhipment centre allowing easy import and export of commodities across the border. Today, it is has become a busy modern port quickly spreading out along the coastline.

Importance

Operating the Kobe Port Terminal with some of the biggest facilities in Western Japanis one of the port’s best features. The port's rail connection brings heavy freight train traffic acting as a major gateway for truck and rail transportation of the country.
